Palentine Wall Sconce

The Palentine Wall Sconce is a hexagonal sconce fabricated from brass with fan openwork panels. The openwork is cut into the brass sheet before the body is welded, so the pattern is part of the structure rather than an applied overlay, and the sconce throws a patterned light against the wall when it is lit. It takes candelabra lamps and is offered in six finishes: Standard Paint, Polished Brass, Satin Brass, Aged Brass Patina, Antique Bronze Patina, and Oil-Rubbed Bronze Patina. The product photo shows one finish; the others are the same fabricated form, finished differently.

Two sizes are available. Small works in hallways, bathrooms, and stair landings where the fixture is seen up close; Large suits entries and longer runs of paired sconces. The backplate sits flat on the wall and the body projects from it by the depth listed in the dimensions for each size. The lamping can be ordered as socketed - candelabra base, lamps not included - or as an integral 3000K LED source so the sconce runs without purchasing bulbs.

Like the rest of the Palentine family, the cut edges of the openwork panels are part of the finished surface: the body is polished, satined, or patinated as a whole, so the pattern reads cleanly from the front and from the side alike rather than stopping at a painted or ground edge.

An earlier version of this page called the form clean and geometric, and claimed the fixture was "built to outlast fixtures made from lesser materials." We have replaced both: the actual form is an ornate hexagon with fan-cut openwork, and the construction is fabricated brass finished by hand in our shop, which is what the page now describes.

Manufacturing

Each Palentine Wall Sconce is made in our Floyd, Virginia workshop. The fan openwork pattern is cut from brass sheet, the hexagonal body is formed to specification, and the body is welded. It is then hand-polished or hand-satined depending on the selected finish, patinated where the finish specification calls for it, and sealed with a clear lacquer coat. The backplate, wiring, and electrical assembly are fitted, and the fixture is tested on the line before it ships.
