Virginia state capitol
Crenshaw Lighting partnered with Hillier Architects and Gary Steffy Lighting Design to illuminate the Virginia State Capitol, a National Historic Landmark and the Western Hemisphere’s oldest legislative body, originally envisioned by Thomas Jefferson and Charles-Louis Clérisseau with inspiration from the Maison Carrée in Nîmes, France. Our team meticulously restored Thomas Jefferson’s original exterior post lanterns flanking the front steps, preserving their aged patina finishes with hand-crafted blends, while crafting a bespoke family of chandeliers, wall-mounted, and ceiling-surface-mounted fixtures featuring lost-wax castings with a dogwood motif—honoring Virginia’s state flower—and hand wheel-cut glass, all finished in a multi-textured aged bronze patina. This award-winning collaboration enhances the capitol’s Jeffersonian elegance, blending historic reverence with modern functionality.
