Calanais Ceiling Drum

The Calanais Ceiling Drum is a flush-mount ceiling fixture fabricated from brass in our Floyd, Virginia workshop. The name uses 'drum', but the form is round and dome-topped, not a flat-sided cylinder: a domed housing sits over a pierced brass band, and a hemispherical frosted glass diffuser covers the light source, softening the glow and keeping it even on the ceiling below. The earlier copy described a 'geometric drum form' three times over; the fixture in the photo is a round, dome-topped flush form with a pierced metal band and a frosted glass diffuser, and this description now matches it.

Fabricated brass is the core of the fixture. The body is cut and shaped from brass rather than pressed in a die or spun on a lathe, so the seams, the piercings in the band, and the fit of the diffuser are all made and inspected by hand. A fabricated brass body can be corrected during fabrication, reworked, and repaired for decades; that is the standard we build to.

The fixture is offered in five finishes: Polished Brass, Satin Brass, Aged Brass Patina, Antique Bronze Patina, and Oil-Rubbed Bronze. The photo shows one finish; every Calanais is hand-finished to whichever of the five you specify, so the same fabrication comes back from the shop with a different surface treatment.

The body is fabricated to specification in our Floyd, Virginia workshop. Brass sheet is cut and formed into the dome and base, the pierced band is cut to pattern and fitted, and the diffuser is seated. Finishing is done individually by hand: the surface is polished or satined to the specified finish, patinated where the finish requires it, and sealed with clear lacquer. Electrical assembly and testing happen on the bench before the fixture leaves the shop. Crenshaw has fabricated lighting in Floyd since 1957.

• Professional installation is recommended due to weight. Mounting hardware and detailed instructions are included. As a flush-mount fixture, the Calanais sits directly against the ceiling and works well in hallways, landings, and rooms where a hanging fixture would drop too low.
