Crenshaw Creates Custom Lighting for St. Claire of Assisi, Daniels Island, SC
Crenshaw Lighting was tasked with creating custom lighting for the St. Claire of Assisi parish church campus in Daniels Island, SC. The project was a collaboration between Hord Architects and Franck & Lohsen Architects of Washington, DC. The design of the church campus draws inspiration from the rich tradition of church architecture in Charleston, resulting in a stunning and meaningful space.
What Makes the Design Unique?
The church campus features a pair of bell towers and a rose window that create a striking facade facing a main thoroughfare on Daniel Island. This design not only serves as a focal point for the community but also establishes a visual connection with the Catholic high school and residential crescent garden nearby.
Impressive Architectural Elements
The nave of the church can accommodate up to 800 individuals and is crowned by a majestic 170-foot tall spire positioned over the altar. This architectural feature adds grandeur to the space and enhances the overall spiritual experience for worshippers.
Salvaged and Incorporated Elements
As part of the design process, several liturgical elements were salvaged from a closed monastery and thoughtfully integrated into the new church campus. This incorporation of historical elements adds depth and character to the space, creating a sense of continuity with the past.
Overall, the collaboration between Crenshaw, Hord Architects, and Franck & Lohsen Architects has resulted in a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary design elements. The custom lighting created by Crenshaw plays a crucial role in enhancing the ambiance of the church and highlighting its architectural features.
