Crenshaw Completes Historic Lighting Restoration and Replication For The University Of Michigan

The William W. Cook Legal Research Library at the University of Michigan, built in 1931, stands as a Gothic masterpiece, renowned for its intricate detailing and historic significance. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this architectural gem required a lighting restoration to enhance its ambiance while preserving its original charm.

Restoration Partnership

In 2008, Crenshaw Lighting collaborated with Lord Aeck Sargent Architects and Gary Steffy Lighting Design to undertake the restoration of the library's iconic reading room. This partnership aimed to revitalize the space, ensuring it remained a vibrant and well-lit environment for students and visitors.

Chandelier Replication

One of the key elements of the restoration project was the replication of the room's nine-foot-tall Gothic chandeliers. These stunning fixtures, featuring a hammered bronze finish with gold leaf accents, were meticulously recreated by Crenshaw Lighting to match the original design. The chandeliers were also equipped with dimming capabilities, allowing the lighting to be adjusted to half power for energy efficiency.

Preserving Historic Charm

Throughout the restoration process, great care was taken to preserve the historic charm of the library's reading room. Crenshaw Lighting's attention to detail and commitment to craftsmanship ensured that the newly restored chandeliers seamlessly integrated with the existing architecture, enhancing the overall aesthetic while maintaining the room's authenticity.

Transforming the Space

Thanks to the expertise and dedication of the restoration team, the William W. Cook Legal Research Library's reading room was transformed from a dimly lit space into a luminous and inviting environment. The restored chandeliers now illuminate the room with a warm and welcoming glow, creating an atmosphere that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

In conclusion, the historic lighting restoration and replication carried out by Crenshaw Lighting at the University of Michigan's William W. Cook Legal Research Library is a testament to the importance of preserving architectural heritage. By combining modern technology with traditional craftsmanship, Crenshaw has successfully revitalized this iconic space, ensuring that its beauty and historic significance will be enjoyed for generations to come.
